Understanding Functional Masterbatch: Types and Basic Information

Have you ever wondered what a functional masterbatch is and how it can be classified into different types? Functional masterbatch is essentially a concentrated form of various plastic additives.

Adding these additives directly can be challenging in terms of dispersion and efficiency, so they are often incorporated in the form of a masterbatch. Let’s delve into the fundamentals of functional masterbatch together.

Table of Contents

Functional Masterbatch Particle Size: These are granular solids with particle sizes ranging from 0.1 to 3mm. When the particle size is as small as 0.1mm (100μm), it’s considered fine powder. Particles within the range of 1-10μm are categorized as fine powder, while those between 0.1-1μm are termed ultrafine powder. On the other hand, particle sizes exceeding 3mm form solid blocks. Generally, smaller particle sizes result in denser mixtures. However, smaller solid particles are more prone to adsorption and aggregation, making it challenging to disperse them in plastic melt.

Particle Size Distribution of Functional Masterbatch: Powder with a broad particle size distribution is more densely packed compared to powders with narrow distributions. Small particles can penetrate the gaps between larger ones, making it difficult to blend two powders with significant differences in particle size.

  1. Moisture Absorption and Defoaming Masterbatch: Comprising metal oxides and fat additives.
  2. Flame Retardant Masterbatch: Composed of flame retardants and resin additives.
  3. Conductive Masterbatch: Consists of long copper fibers encased in resin pellets.
  4. Foaming Masterbatch: Comprising a blend of composite foaming agents, lubricants, dispersants, and coloring agents.
  5. Anti-Ultraviolet Masterbatch: Formed by layering two types of UV protectants, along with carriers, dispersants, and other auxiliary agents.
  6. Weather-Resistant Masterbatch: Comprised of light stabilizers, resin, and auxiliary agents.
  7. Cooling Masterbatch: Primarily used for PP (Polypropylene) to achieve cooling in the temperature range of 30 to 50 degrees.
  8. Brightening Masterbatch: Also known as bright masterbatch, its purpose is to enhance product brightness. Typically, color masterbatch accounts for 20%-30%, while product content is in the range of 0.2%-0.3%. Excessive usage can affect product saturation and printing quality.
  9. Perfume Masterbatch: Provides a long-lasting fragrance, lasting up to 10 to 12 months, and is commonly used in toys and daily items.
